Company History
In 1872, after much time and effort was dedicated by several prominent Evansville citizens, a former Marine Hospital on the banks
of the Ohio River was purchased. Evansville businessman Bernard Schapker contacted the head of the Daughters of Charity in
Emmitsburg, Maryland, to ask them to provide healthcare to the community. Following the discernment of the leaders of the
Daughters of Charity, the decision was made, in faith, to respond as a divine call. They arrived in Evansville, Indiana, that same year.
Just a few years later, the Daughters of Charity began to plan for a new hospital to meet the current and future healthcare needs of
the community, and in February of 1894, St. Mary’s Hospital opened its doors. On Sunday, May 17, 1953, ground was broken once
again for a new facility, and in 1956, patients and equipment were moved to 3700 Washington Avenue in Evansville.
