The Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, in partnership with the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, invites applications and nominations for the position of Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology, Northwell Health Cancer Institute. The health system is seeking an exceptional, dynamic, and visionary board-certified surgical oncologist and physician executive capable of leading and integrating surgical cancer care across one of the nation’s largest health systems, serving the greater metropolitan New York area.

Reporting to the Physician-in-Chief and Executive Director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, the Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology will lead all surgical oncology programs across the system — partnering with the Deputy Physicians-in-Chief for Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology and with regional and hospital cancer leaders throughout New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Hudson Valley, and Connecticut. The role offers the opportunity to shape and expand multidisciplinary surgical cancer programs across all disease sites within one of the nation’s largest health care systems, caring for one of the most diverse patient populations in the world.

As Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Surgical Oncology, this leader will develop and execute the system-wide strategic vision for surgical oncology services, overseeing quality, efficiency, and access across all disease sites and care settings. Working in close partnership with the Deputy Physicians-in-Chief for Medical and Radiation Oncology, the relevant surgical department chairs, and regional and hospital cancer leaders, this individual will recruit and develop outstanding surgeons and elevate the national reputation of surgical oncology across the Northwell Health Cancer Institute.

Surgical Oncology at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute

Surgical oncology at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute encompasses the full breadth of cancer surgery, with specialists providing advanced operative care across all major disease sites — including breast, gastrointestinal, hepatopancreatobiliary, colorectal, thoracic, endocrine, melanoma and soft tissue, gynecologic, genitourinary, and head and neck cancers. Surgeons practice within a multidisciplinary, disease-site-based model alongside medical and radiation oncology colleagues across the system.  Northwell’s surgical oncologists are engaged in advancing the field — adopting minimally invasive and robotic techniques, performing complex multi-organ and cytoreductive resections, delivering regional and intraoperative therapies, and pioneering innovative approaches developed in collaboration with the system’s research enterprise and academic partners.

Patients across the system benefit from coordinated, team-based care in which surgical oncology is fully integrated with diagnostic, medical, radiation, and supportive services. Multidisciplinary tumor boards and dedicated nurse navigation ensure that every patient’s treatment plan reflects the collective expertise of the Cancer Institute.

The ideal candidate for this role will be board certified by the Board certified by the American Board of Surgery with fellowship training and/or certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology or a comparable surgical oncology discipline; possess administrative and leadership experience at an academic medical center or health system, such as Chief, Division Chief, Vice Chair, Chair, or service-line leader, have demonstrated experience in clinical, research, and teaching achievement commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Professor. We are seeking a nationally recognized clinical leader and an actively practicing surgical oncologist with strong operations experience; track record of improving efficiency and quality of services.
